Subject	Factory transmissions painted?

Message	I'm comparing my current transmission and my soon to be replacement transmission. My current one has some higher mileage on it and pretty beat up exterior. But, my newer one Supposedly has around 40 K on it, and definitely seems to have paint or some sort of silver coating but hard to tell. What was the treating of the exterior on these five-speeds from the factory?
